Bug Description

After upgrading udev and the kernel from Ubuntu 12.04 to Quantal (linux-image-3.5.0-5-generic 3.5.0-5.5), USB devices no longer work. For example, I am now typing this on the built-in keyboard of the machine (ThinkPad X220) but the attached Microsoft USB keyboard doesn't work. Nor does the attached USB mouse.

When I look in syslog I see that the devices are detected. For example, on plugging in the keyboard the following messages appear.

Jul 25 16:01:46 tenerife kernel: [ 2465.144251] usb 1-1.5.4: new low-speed USB device number 18 using ehci_hcd

Jul 25 16:01:46 tenerife mtp-probe: bus: 1, device: 18 was not an MTP device

(I first tried apport-bug but it fails with a networking error even though I have Internet access, as you can see.)

Thomas Hood, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

I had the same issue using ppa: upubuntu-com/kernel-amd64

Using the latest upstream kernel, and installing the package "extras", my usb keyboard and mouse works normally.

Christopher, I can't report the bug because I have another keyboard unless the USB keyboard.

I solved the problem by installing the same version of the kernel directly from KernelMainlineBuilds.

What I can do is attach the same files attached to Thomas, but with the upstream kernel, which is working perfectly here on my machine.

I'm not sure what you mean by this so I decided to run the daily build anyway.

I am now running linux-image-3.6.0-030600rc1-generic 3.6.0-030600rc1.201208022056 and USB devices work normally again.

Thomas Hood, thank you for testing the mainline kernel.

The next step is to perform a reverse bisect from linux-image-3.5.0-5-generic 3.5.0-5.5 to linux-image-3.6.0-030600rc1-generic 3.6.0-030600rc1.201208022056 , in order to identify the fixing commit(s). Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?

Thank you for your understanding.

I have a laptop HP Pavilion 6000. From the moment you install the test version the kernel on the testing ubuntu (12.10) does not work for me at the keyboard and USB mouse. No device into the USB does not work on kernel 3.5!
Any update available does not fix this bug - kernel 3.5.

This is a beta release of Ubuntu 12.10, so this should be interesting.
