Bug Description
The installation of 12.04 seems impossible on this x86 machine.
12.04 destop fails with an "unrecoverable error"
12.04 alternate has a reproducible error during kernel install, on the terminal the message
"depmod[2697]: segfault at 4 ip 00cbc481 sp bfb22030 error 4 in ld-2.15.so" is the first error.
Both cd run their md5sum self checks successfully, memtest does not show any errors after several runs, and 10.04 did run with out problems and could be installed afterwards without problems as well.
During an upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04 several dialogs popped up with all characters replaced by "empty boxes". The upgrade claimed to be successfull never the less, but hung during shutdown and had a corrupeted filesystem that hung on reboot afterwards.
Use of noapci and acpi=off boot parameters make no difference with regard of the error.
I've tried the no-pae mini installer as well to rule out basic problems with PAE and got the same error.
I'll attach the output of
# lshw
