Bug Description

This computer is managed by Landscape. Unfortunatly Landscape causes a huge amount of broken packages because of smartpm installing the wrong architecture on multiarch machines which cause this type of package discrepancy.
even an apt-get install -f doesn't fix it.

Here were the steps to reproduce the error:
Use Landscape to manage the packages
User gets prompted for upgrades from upgrade manager sometimes and performs those upgrades as well
sudo smart update
sudo smart upgrade
Fail

aptitude was so much better at keeping packages from breaking.

What does "apt-cache policy libudev0:amd64 libudev0:i386" show? They should both show the same available version.

Anyway, Ubuntu never supported smart as a package manager, and it has never been tested with multiarch. I think Landscape moved from smart to apt a while ago, are you using the latest client?

To fix this for you, perhaps you can try "sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove libudev0:i386" and verify that this doesn't remove i386 packages you deeply care about. If it does, you can re-install them after the upgrade and apt-get install -f?

I'm closing the bug as this is not a bug in udev. We can continue discussing how to fix your system here, of course.

Landscape doesn't use smart anymore. It'd be good to try out the latest version which uses APT and see if everything works correctly.

This bug can be closed. The answer in #5 is the correct answer to this bug. SmartPM has been fased out in favor of APT which works a bit better. (not perfect, still breaks Ubuntu Software Center for the end user, but that's a different bug).

I changed the bug to Fix Relased as APT is the fix.

status: Incomplete → Fix Released
