Bug Description

The gvrng package installs without incident, but the program won't launch. When attempting to launch it from the command-line, the following error occurs:

$ gvrng
/usr/games/gvrng: 2: exec: /usr/share/GvRng/gvrng.py: Permission denied

This can be fixed simply by setting execute permissions on /usr/share/GvRng/gvrng.py.

A quick workaround for users of the current broken package is to run the following command as root:

dpkg-statoverride --update --add root root 755 /usr/share/GvRng/gvrng.py

Thanks for reporting.

This issue seems to still be present, so I've forwarded a bug report to Debian.

I have some good news and bad news.

The good news is that, as the debian bug report mentioned, the permission problem has been resolved. I've verified this in gvrng 4.4-3 which has been synced to Ubuntu bionic (the current development version). I'm therefore marking this as fix released. If anyone need a fix for this bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, please perform as much as possible of the SRU Procedure [1] to bring the need to a developer's attention.

The bad news is that I noticed the package is in danger of being removed from Ubuntu all togheter, perhaps before 18.04 is released. Looks like it depends on an older library which has become deprecated and is going away. Please see bug 1731725 or https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=822585 for more details on this.
