Update manager will not open when I click on icon

Bug Description

Most of the time, when Update Manager has updates to be applied, it will not open when I click on the icon. I can check for updates by right clicking on the icon, and I can apply the updates likewise. But I cannot see the screen that shows me what will be updated before I apply them. The tiny triangle pointer on the left side of the icon appears to be light blue.

I am running 12.04. It was installed from the ISO (not upgraded).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1027226/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

After running sudo apt-get update, restarting my computer, and connecting to the internet via wireless connection, the issue seems to be resolved on my machine. When I reported this bug with apport, it informed me that the issue was already reported here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/739599

Currently, I have 318 updates which are applying, and I can see the update interface by clicking on the the update manager icon on the right side of my screen.

I am not seeing a crash -- I think. Right clicking on the icon brings up some options, which are operational. It is only the simple left click that is failing.

Ahh, in my case the crash happened after attempting an update using the right-click options. The update proceeded for about 10 minutes, then the crash occured with no changes to the number of updates available after restarting.

Hi guys -

It looks like you experienced two different bugs.

Doug's report of the update-manager window not appearing, fits bug 989588. Like you say, there isn't a crash, the window just doesn't show.

Axl did have a crash, and apparently ran into bug 739599.

I'm marking this bug a duplicate of 989588, since I think Doug's report corresponds to that. Doug, I think you'll agree, but if you think there are separate issues, you could un-dupe this if you wanted.

Axl, hopefully you're all set for the moment. :)

Thanks.

I'm good with the dup status. Bug 989588 does appear to be the same to me.
