Bug Description

I am using this audio device;
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller

Configuration is "Analog surround 5.1"

Ubuntu's controls are all messed up:
Moving "balance slider" moves fade in opposite direction,
moving "fade" adjusts balance slider
moving subwoofer adjusts output volume slider

needless to day, it's impossible to get any decent 5.1 audio out of that

Pulseaudio volume control, once installed, revealed that each channel - especially front channels were at low volume. moving any of the 6 volume sliders in Pulseaudio volume fixed the problem by setting all channels to equal volume.
