Bug Description

Hello,

     Yesterday I installed ubuntu 12.04 64bit version. I updated all packages up to date. I have an issue during shut down. It hangs on during shut down by showing this message.

Last few lines:
*All processes ended within 2 seconds [OK]
Modem-manager[715]: <info> Caught signal 15, shutting down...
Modem-manager[715]: <info> Modem /org/freedesktop/Modem-Manager/modems/1: state changed (registered ->disabled)
Modem-manager[715]: <info> (ttyACM0) closing serial port
Modem-manager[715]: <info> (ttyACM0) serial port closed
Modem-manager[715]: <info> Modem /org/freedesktop/Modem-Manager/modems/1: state changed (disabling -> disabling)

*Deconfiguring network interfaces ... [OK]
*Deactivating swap ... [OK]
umount: /run/lock: not mounted
*will now halt
[786:148677] power down

I am using internet through my mobile GPRS modem. It might be related to network manager.
Note: There is no issues in restarting the system. System hangs only on shut down.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1024868/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

By seeing the syslog, I selected modem manager that might be reason for hanging issue.

Thanks for pointing out the procedure to file the bug.

I tried the workarounds mentioned in this bug report.

But none of them helped me to solve hanging issue.

Please let me know if any workaround to solve temporarily.

How is it hanging? Is "power down" the last message you see on the screen? If so, then this would be a bug in the kernel that renders the code that is supposed to allow the system to power off by itself not working...

Yes. System is hanging by showing "power down" message. After that there is no response and hangs. I need to switch off the system by pressing power button only.

    If it is the kernel issue means, how it could be solved? I tried fresh installation of Mint 13 and xubuntu 12.04.1 also. Same issue happening.

Note: Now I am using xubuntu 12.04.1. But hanging issue is not solved.

on RR i386, i was having that hang due to : modem-manager "caught signal 15, shutting down ..."

As wicd is now installed by myself (tired of n-m), i've purged network-manager & network-manager-gnome; and now ubuntu can close without hanging.

Hi Marius Kotsbak (mariusko) ,

    I tried all possible workarounds. I properly disconnect and removed the mobile from computer also. Still I am getting this hanging issue. But there is no issue in restart the machine.
 For your information, Now I am using Xubuntu 32bit version. But hanging issue is not solved.

I updated my BIOS version to latest one. Luckily I can shut down the system without hanging issue. There is no hanging issue for last two days. I think that it might be specific hardware issue. But let me check for some time to find out hanging issue is coming back or not.
