If anyone does have suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. :) I have everything unmuted, have checked pulseaudio, alsa settings, uninstalled and reinstalled alsa and pulseaudio packages, and read the top 20 results for a billion google searches. :(

do you mean pulseaudio won't work when your front audio panel support Jack detect ?

line out has higher priority than headpone

No...

So, on my desktop which was new at the time, I could not get any speaker or headphone to produce sound through the built-in audio hardware, whether I used the front jack or back jack, plugged in a variety of speakers and headphones, etc. Pulseaudio could detect the hardware it seems, but I was not able to produce sound.

At the suggestion of a friend who has used Linux for much longer than me, I eventually worked around the problem by buying a $10 USB audio adaptor, which works, and promptly forgot to continue digging into this issue. :P

It would be nice if I could find a real solution, though.
