compiz replace made the screen flash, and it doesn't seem to be coming back. Cool, so it seems to work for now. So is that just a workaround or do you think it will happen again?

Usually when it happend, the Update Manager was the first to wedge itself in the upper left hand of the screen. so it pulls up fine now.

I'm not using Beryl, though i did leave it installed.

sorry. forgot a detail. vid driver is what came with ubuntu, but I upgraded to the "restricted nvidia driver', and that didn't affect it at all.

You need to add the following to your xorg.conf in the Device or Screen sections:
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"

If you use the restricted driver manager to enable the driver it'll do this for you.

That option is already there, so i don't think it will help.

FYI. I have since changed my screen resolution to 1280x1024 but have not tried to reproduce the problem.
It was originally 1024x768.

since then i have removed beryl, and upon checking synaptic, i see that compiz-extra is not installed.

I tried to remove completely (with configuration files) desktop-effects and compiz (core, plugin etc..) and install again.
No luck.

One more thing.
I had installed gnome-compiz-manager before.
Could it be in conflict with desktop-effects?

I tried to remove gnome-compiz-manager completely and then I reinstalled compiz, desktop-effects and metacity (with libraries etc) completely.
No luck.

Check you have "decoration" listed in gconf-editor under /apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/active_plugins. I've had this problem previously when I've had old compiz gconf settings.

A workaround is:

With gnome-compiz-manager installed, open GL Desktop on System->Preferences.
Enable "Enable GL Desktop" and "Show Tray Icon".
This gives you no top bar.
Now close Gnome Compiz Preferences (GL Desktop window), point your mouse on Tray icon, Right click on it and select Preferences.
GL Desktop Window open again with top bar on all windows....

@Chris
With this workaround "decoration" is present.
But just opening Desktop Effects the problem come up and no "decoration" is listed in g-conf-editor.

If I launch desktop-effects from terminal I get this:

nvidia hardware not available
Avviso del window manager: Il valore «» nel database di configurazione non è valido per la scorciatoia «toggle_shaded»
gtk-window-decorator: Could not acquire decoration manager selection on screen 0 display ":0.0"

Here's my experience. Launching desktop-effects from the command line cures the problem for me.

1. When enabling desktop-effects from System > Preferences, I got no decorations.

2. I installed gnome-compiz-manager, still no decorations.

3. I uninstalled everything compiz-related (but not XGL) using synaptic (using "complete removal").

4. I re-installed desktop-effects and dependent packages

5. Still no decorations when enabling desktop-effects from System > Preferences

6. When launching desktop-effects from command line, I get this (see below) BUT, window decorations now appear:

gilgongo@monoplane:~$ desktop-effects
nvidia restricted driver is already enabled
gtk-window-decorator: Could not acquire decoration manager selection on screen 0 display ":0.0"

7. Rebooted my system, all desktop effects working fine and continue to be so.

I had a similar problem:
my system: gutsy + gnome + compiz + radeon driver

running desktop-effects and enabling the effects remove all window decorations.

I fixed it by installing "compiz-gnome" wich is a package for compiz window decorators for gnome.

Now i have title bars on the top of my windows
