You can't see that there is a scrollbar either, likely because the small marker has the same color as the selected item. :-/

I was unable to recreate this on 12.04 using the Ambiance theme. I was both able to see Security Updates and the scrollbar. What theme are you using?

@Brian, As far as I can remember, I haven't done any theme changes, and I'm having the same glitch on more than one computer.
Again, it's not that "Security updates" is completely lost, it's just that you have to scroll up to see it.

Isn't the screenshot I attached giving you any hint here? If not, come back with more detailed instructions of how I can find out what you need to know. Thanks!

Okay, I'm seeing this today. I think it is because the first package in the list of security updates is highlighted which then moves the list down.

Adding screenshot of how it's supposed to look.

I just experienced this problem when there were no other types of upgrades, ie. all upgrades were "important security updates". However, the headline did not show up until there were other headlines in the list of available upgrades.

I now know how to reproduce it...

When there are more than 4 Important Security Updates. If you see the headline by default, then there's something different. I don't.

What you can do to force the situation:

Scroll down using the arrow-keys. Just press it until you see the headline disappear. Then press it 4 positions back up. As #3 and #4 mentions, the highlighting uses the same solid color as the scroll bar indicator, thus rendering the scrollbar invisible.

There are two parts.

1) Fix Update Manager so the scroll pane is initially at the top, exposing the headline.
2) Ambience bug: The marker should not be able to render the scrollbar invisible.

The issue about the invisible scrollbar is reported in #828172 of the light-themes package (containing Ambiance).

I suggest going with the light-themes bug, because most essentially the reason why a user does not see "Important Security Updates" is that the scroll bar widget has visually merged with the background.

I hope that someone /also/ will make the Update Manager scroll its update list to the top for its initial state! That's hopefully a very easy thing...

Unduplicating, this issue is mainly about the initial element scrolled in. Bug 828172 adds confusion, but it is not the main issue in this bug.
