Bug Description

My display manager (as you should be able to see) is gdm, and my desktop is GNOME 3.

When I log in, the mouse pointer is working; after I have pressed Enter to enter my password, and the screen refreshes (i.e. my session is starting up) the mouse pointer does not work: moving on the touchpad does not move the pointer.

If I switch to another virtual terminal and back, the pointer starts to work again.

Reuben Thomas, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-input-synaptics REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

I still get this bug in Saucy, but not in an easily-reproducible form: after login, the touch pad works fine, but if I leave the machine unattended, then when I come back, and the screen saver has activated, then sometimes either a) the button does not work (on my Macbook Air, this is pressing the touchpad down), but the pointer still moves when I move my finger on the pad; or b) the touchpad does not work at all (moving my finger on it does not move the pointer).

In both cases, I can make the touchpad work again by switching to a text virtual terminal and then back to the X virtual terminal.

By the way, this statement in message #2 does not make sense: "Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful."

I originally reported this bug against Ubuntu 12.04. There is no information on this bug for a release since then, so the assertion that "information from the prior release is already available" is false. (Although, this statement is not very clear, as it only implies that it means the release prior to the development release; it does not actually say so.)

In any case, I've now supplied information about the 13.10 release, i.e. 3 releases more recent, which, even though it's not the development release (which I do not have the capability easily to test on this machine) does suggest that the problem is likely to persist there too.
