change screen resolution through command prompt

I installed ubuntu-6.10
but it displays unsupported screen resolution if i want to change the screen resolution then i have to restart it on command prompt, How to start it on command prompt
and where i can change the resolution?
I am having samsung LCD 17`` please any can help me...
