Doesn't look like a gnome bug, does "echo -e '\a'" work? Do you have a speaker on your computer?

I have this issue, too. (I don't see "Audio" in the Preferences Menu, though. The closest I have is System > Preferences > Sound > System Beep > Enable System Beep. I guess this is just a difference in translation.)

Since I get no beeps on the virtual console, either, I suspect that this is a kernel issue. (I do have a speaker on my computer and esd works fine.)

I am using feisty on a Samsung X20 XVM 1730 V laptop.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Now that the 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon release of Ubuntu is out, we were wondering if you can still reproduce this issue. Could you please download and try the new version of Ubuntu from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and report back your results. If the issue is still present in the new release, please attach the following information:

* uname -a > uname-a.log
* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment. For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help and feedback.

Short answer: I just downloaded the gutsy live CD and there's still no
system beep.

I hadn't read your message yet and didn't think of saving the logs. I
will do so in the next couple of days.

Thanks for working on this!

FWIW, this also happens under gutsy with a custum-built 2.6.23.13 kernel (config attached).

Hi Philipp,

Sorry for such a delayed response. I'm curious if you'd also be willing to test with a Hardy Alpha release. It has an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .

Also, we'll be keeping this report open against the actively developed kernel. However Against linux-source-2.6.20 and linux-source-2.6.22 this bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being closed. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates . Thanks!

Hello Leann,

I haven't downloaded the hardy LiveCD yet, but I am running a custom-built 2.6.24 kernel (configuration attached) and I still get no terminal beep.

Hi Phillipp,

Thanks for the feedback. So the Hardy Alpha kernel most recently sync'd with the upstream 2.6.24 mainline kernel. Since you are running your own custom 2.6.24 kernel (I assume based off a vanilla kernel) I suspect Hardy Alpha4 won't resolve the issue. However, it would be good to test just to verify. Thanks.

I can verify this problem on gutsy too and in the absence of a "notify when silent" gnome-terminal option like konsole has it's difficult for me to get notified when for example a large compile just completed (ok, I could do a "make; ogg123 <audio-file.ogg>" but I'd much rather to a "make; echo -e '\a'").

Unfortunately bandwidth is very expensive where I live so it's infeasable for me to download a Hardy Alpha LiveCD and the local mirrors don't stock pre-release stuff so I cannot test this on Hardy.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

now that you closed it I actually got around to testing

            echo -e '\a'

on Intrepid and guess what - it works. So I guess this bug should be closed in any event.

Hi, after two years without activity, I reopened the bug. I was programming a script when I noted that don't had a bell.
I test with the follow combinations, and no positive results:
echo -e "\a"
echo -e '\a'

The man echo, doesn't give major info.
I attached the files asked by Lean, to give information.
Thanks

Hi Detlef,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 101838

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
