Could you run "mutter --replace" and see if this still happens?

Are you using open-source or proprietary (catalyst/fglrx) driver?

It happens both with proprietary drivers that are installed with those from the panel Additional Driver
I have not installed Mutter

I installed Mutter, but the same problem.
The system is 64bit
