cbowman57, thanks for the link, but, sadly, for me at least, it doesn't fix the LibreOffice problem.

Also, oen thing to note is that, in Writer, it chooses the automatic color to be compliant with the theme, but documents originally created with a white background will likely be close to impossible to read.

If I recall correctly, LibreOffice currently gets its theming from GTK+2.

Found out about a workaround somewhat recently:

1.) Go to Tools > Options..., then LibreOffice > Appearance.
2.) Set General > Document Background to White instead of Automatic.

Still a problem on xfce/ubuntu 12.10 and Libre Office Version 3.6.2.2

 I cannot do this:
1.) Go to Tools > Options..., then LibreOffice > Appearance.
2.) Set General > Document Background to White instead of Automatic.

because it will not allow me to select that option. If I do it without selecting the tick box the action is ignored.

Abiword, Gnumeric and Netbeans, don't seem to have an issue but I notice that Eclipse does the same thing as LO. (But coding and preparing a presentation are a bit different!) I can't prepare a new Impress slide without constantly previewing it! I.e. not WYSIWYG! The upshot is that I cannot have a dark theme and use Libre Office Impress.

Can't there be an option to NOT inherit the local theme? I.e. just use a default LO theme or something?

Ha! It seems to be the theme that's at fault. I used the advice of cbowman57: "malys RevoLT theme http://fav.me/d4xq6q3 includes good app fixes, both gtk 2 & 3" This worked. I can set the LO background to white.
