Flashplugin-installer fails to download flash plugin when behind firewall

When installing flashplugin from inside a corporate firewall, the flashplugin-installer scripts do not honor the system wide proxy settings, and in fact do not even get the settings from the environment.

I can download the file manually with curl, wget, and firefox without problem, both as a user and as sudo.
