Pattern replace bug in bash 4.2.24(1)-release

Upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 caused one of my bash scripts to break due to the following bug:

Bash 4.2 patchlevel 24 in Ubuntu 12.04 is affected by the bug, looks like it's fixed in patchlevel 27.
