Bug Description

I'm using OpenERP 6.1 release version. My setup uses a hierarchical list of partner categories (Purchase->Configuration->Address Book->Partner Categories).

The OpenERP handbook explains that clicking on any category will list all partners belonging to that category and its sub categories. This doesn't seem to work like that in v6.1 (anymore?).

I have created a test setup with two partner categories:
Main
Main/Sub

And then I have added one partner to Main/Sub. When I now click on the Main category in the Partner Categories list, it shows no partners. If I click on the Main/Sub category, my partner appears in the list.

I don't know if this is an intended change and the documentation is just lagging or whether this is a bug in the code. I'd rather consider it a bug in the code that should be fixed, because the behaviour as described in the documentation seems very useful to me.

Hello Gjanssens,

I have completely read your bug report this is not a bug but it's behaviour, I think might have a misunderstood something.

Let me explain:

You are correct on point that Partner Category is a hierarchical list but is displayed those partner whose are under this category not on the child category. Because this will create a problem. Let's take one example.

I have one partner category like, Customer/Consumers/My Consumers each category have 100 partners, then It will doesn't make sense that it will displayed like that My Customer displayed 100 partners, Consumers displayed 200 partners and Customer displayed 300.... and it's become confusing.

We have used any category menu for sorting/categorise record i.e Partner Category, Product Category.Partner Category are used for categorise the partner, If main record displayed all the record then hard to founf those record which are user only main category.

This behaviour are same as on v5,v6 , v6.1 and trunk and we had not changed it. Also I have checked the doc of OpenERP and I could not found this thing which you are report on bug.

Would you please check http://doc.openerp.com/v6.0/book/1/1_2_Guided_Tour/1_2_Guided_Tour_connect_openerp.html 's "Partner Categories" section. Which will clear you.

Hope this will help.

Thanks for the understanding!

I meant to add a link to the documentation, but I forgot:
http://doc.openerp.com/v6.1/book/2/3_CRM_Contacts/contacts.html#categorizing-your-partners

That section clearly states that selecting a category will also list any subcategory. Although the sections are slightly suffled, this was also documented as such for version 5 already:
http://doc.openerp.com/v5.0/book/2/2_5_CRM/2_5_CRM_partners.html#partner-categories

I forgot to mention that I did follow the link you give, but that part of the documentation only seems to explain how to create categories.

It doesn't talk about what is supposed to happen when you click on an existing partner category. That is described in the links I added in comment #2.

Searching some more on launchpad, this bug may be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/openobject-server/+bug/522528 but I don't know the internals of OpenERP sufficiently to decide on this.

Specifically in response to your assertion in comment #1:

The following bugreport seems to claim that you should not be allowed to use the main category as real category when it also has sub categories:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/openobject-server/+bug/873354

So if you can only assign leaf categories (as opposed to node categories) to partners, it would certainly make sense that selecting a parent category also lists the partners from its child categories.
