Please show the output of this command:

ls -l /etc/alternatives/text.plymouth

Chances are that this is a recursive symlink. Do you remember making any changes to your plymouth configuration that might explain this?

Huh; I definitely wasn't expecting *that* output. Can you please attach that file to this bug report?

Afterwards, you should be able to fix your upgrade issue by running:

sudo rm /etc/alternatives/text.plymouth
sudo ln -s /lib/plymouth/themes/satanic-text/satanic-text.plymouth /etc/alternatives/text.plymouth

Ok; since these contents match the Ubuntu SE theme, this doesn't look like a bug in the Ubuntu plymouth package. Closing as invalid.
