Bug Description

As in summary, opening Sound settings and going to Input tab, there are no entries in "Record sound from" list related to internal sound card.

The sound card is recognized by alsa and pulseaudio (info attached) and curiously it appears starting gnome-control-center within GNOME Shell session (i.e. starting the upstream Sound capplet).

Have you tried actually plugging something in? The new sound settings will not show things if they are not available.

Or is it an internal microphone that does not show up?

Bug #1001554 under indicator-sound may be a duplicate of this bug.

Before discovering this bug, I confirmed and added a comment to that report -- in summary, the microphone input on an eeepc (which is built-in) does not appear in the gnome-control-center "record sound from" list. However the microphone works and input volume can be adjusted with the indicator-sound dropdown slider *when an application is actively using the mic*. Please let me know if I can provide any details about my hardware that will make tracking this down easier.

David, yes it's the internal microphone/input (Realtek ALC889 on MSI 790GX-G65 motherboard). Pulseaudio seems unaffected to me, see attached out `pactl list`, and nothing changes plugging headphone jacks.

If it's just the internal mic (which seems to be the case for both Luca and Philip), it's probably bug 946232, please head over there, see if the description and workaround is accurate. Thanks!

Thanks David. Bug 946232 exactly describes my situation. Description fits and workaround solves my problem (I uploaded alsa-info as a comment to that bug).
