I also have this bug. I upgraded to Mint 13 Mate via Mint Mate 13RC - just by using the update manager. To test this issue, I then did a new install of Mint 13 Mate iso and the broken pipe message still occurs.

My motherboard is a H55-USB3 Gigabyte with a first generation core i3 processor with 4GB of RAM.

I didn't get this same error in Ubuntu 12.04 (Unity) or Mint 12 with Cinnamon 1.4

I have this problem on Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon, clean install on AMD64.
Although it shows up on shutdown, I think the message is actually generated during boot time, and the console screen only shows it when subsequently shutting down.

Running Mint 13 Cinnamon on dual boot with XP. Motherboard is Gigabyte M68M-S2P (Nvidia chip sets)
Started with "Cannot write bytes, Broken Pipe" message at shutdown. Performed steps below from http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=104084

1. Boot into recovery mode
2. Repair broken packages
3. Hit the continue boot button
4. Log in to the desktop
5. Reboot
6. Log in normally

Still shows message at shutdown, and now shows same at startup inlarger letters.
