when upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04, do-release-upgrade complains "WARNING: Failed to read mirror file" [see output below], but continues and if the upgrade is proceeded with, it appears [at least upon a brief inspection] to be successful.
digging a bit further with strace, it seems that the file in question is /tmp/update-manager-nnnnnn/Ubuntu.mirrors:
open("/tmp/update-manager-AkiIxq/Ubuntu.mirrors", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
indeed, the file is not there:

today, i happened to be upgrading a different computer from 12.04 to 12.10, and am again seeing this same message [although it is now more difficult to diagnose since do-release-upgrade seems to now use screen].
what else can i do to help further troubleshoot this?
