Bug Description

In USC I click on the button in the bottom left to turn on recommendations. If I close USC, and then open again, I have to click on the button again. I expect this setting to be saved to file, but it appears it is not.

Hi Stapel, and thank you for your report. In looking at your attached logs, I see that there appears to be an error during authentication and so the recommendations opt-in process is never completing. Could you please try the following and let us know if this clears the problem?

1. Close Software Center (if it is open).
2. From the Dash, search for "Passwords and Keys" and launch it.
3. In the "Filter" field at the top right, type "Software Center"
4. Expand the node if necessary, right click on the entry for Software Center and choose "Delete" from the context menu.
5. Close "Passwords and Keys".
6. Launch Software Center and turn on recommendations. It should take a few moments while your recommendations profile is uploaded and your personalized recommendations downloaded, but you should see a set of recommended applications fill the bottom panel. If the panel disappears, then the problem is still occuring.

Please let us know how you fare with the above steps, and if you still have difficulties, we can continue to debug.

Thanks!

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the help. I have followed the steps but unfortunately it did
not solve the problem.

When I click on the "turn on recommendations" button, the button
disappears, and a message about submitting data appears briefly, after
that the button is not visible any more but there is also no
"recommended applications" section.

If I close USC and re-open, the "turn on recommendations" button is back.

Could this be because of a corrupt or faulty "sources.list" file? After
I upgraded to 12.04 from 11.10, I had a problem with the update manager
when loading the package data from the repositories. It complained about
"independent sources" or something similar. I googled around and the
answer I found was to replace my sources.list file. I generated a new
file from a utility on the web ( http://repogen.simplylinux.ch/).

Best Regards

Stapel

Hello again Stapel! My apologies, this actually appears to be the issue described in bug 994632, so I will mark this as a duplicate of that one.

This issue is fixed in an upcoming update to Software Center that should be out in a day or two, but in the meantime you can easily fix this issue yourself by opening a terminal and typing the following to install the missing package (ubuntu-sso-client-gtk):

   $ sudo apt-get install ubuntu-sso-client-gtk

Of course, please report back here if this does not solve the problem for you. Many thanks!

Hi Gary,

Should I have Pre-released updates (precise-proposed) ticked in Software
Sources to receive the new package that will fix this problem. I have
received another email about this that says:

This bug was fixed in the package software-center - 5.2.2

---------------
software-center (5.2.2) precise-proposed; urgency=low

By the way ,are any of the boxes under "Install updates from:" ticked on
a default install? (I'm always trying to keep my settings closest to
default to avoid running into trouble).

Thanks for all your help.

cheers

Hi again Stapel! I would not recommend you turn on pre-release updates as a general policy, but you do not need to as 5.2.2 is now available in Precise itself.

You need only open Update Manager and do an update. After the update, please check that you have 5.2.2 (or 5.2.2.1) by typing the following in a terminal:

  $ apt-cache policy software-center

And of course, please report back here if you still encounter the original issue, which should be fixed after your update!

Regarding your question about "Install updates from:" settings, by default you will want only the first two items checked (Security Updates and Recommended Updates).

Let us know how it goes for you, and thanks again!

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your help so far. I ran update manager and I now do have
version 5.2.2.1 of USC installed.

Unfortunately, this still did not solve my problem. After I updated my
system I opened USC and then clicked on "Turn on recommendations". A
dialog then popped up where I had to sign into my USC account. I could
not remember my password so I clicked the "I forgot my password" link,
and my password was reset successfully. After that a message appeared
again at the bottom of the USC dialog about "submitting inventory...",
but then no recommended applications appeared. When I closed USC and
then opened it again, the "Turn on recommendations" button is back.

Let me know if I need to email any log files or anything that might be
of help.

It seems a reboot was all that was needed to finally get this working for me.
