Options identified:
(a) factor the HUD so it can paint to a standalone cairo context, which we then superimpose onto the PNG (not sure how easy this will be to integrate into the CLI unless we accept it may use cairo)
(b) write a separate HUD not using cairo/gtk which can go into the CLI. This will be a bit horrid duplicatey.
