Bug Description
This is probably a significant task best for a future release, but would be nice for the user: if widgets are unavailable due to conditions not being met (buttons, dropdowns, etc), they should be disabled/greyed out/etc. May be more elegant than popping a dialog.
For example, from an old bug:
Disable the mash wizard button until there are mash steps.
