Bug Description

The PPA does not propose any boot-repair package for 14.04 (Trusty).

----------- WORKAROUND 1 (recommended)
Type the 4 commands indicated here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair#A2nd_option_:_install_Boot-Repair_in_Ubuntu

----------- WORKAROUND 2
You can download the "precise" DEBs packages here: https://launchpad.net/~yannubuntu/+archive/boot-repair/+packages
First install the 'glade2script' DEB, then 'boot-sav', then 'boot-repair'.

----------- WORKAROUND 3
Use Boot-Repair-Disk https://sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair-cd/home

I think it should be a high priority when somebody installs Ubuntu 14.04, and then they are locked out of being able to do work that must be done in Windows, and they ae not able to boot Windows. Are there any workarounds? Help would be greatly appreciated!

I also find myself with an unbootable system after a failed 12.04-14.04 upgrade. The official docs recommend using boot-repair to fix it, but boot-repair isn't yet packaged for 14.04. In the meantime, I'll try the workaround of manually installing older packages.

I f there are no plans only wishlist for a trusty ppa in boot-repair, we need to modify all the wiki documentation to have users not install from a ppa with trusty.

hi Fred,
I have updated the wiki ( https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair ) so that the install procedure is working also for trusty users. It is still more convenient than installing DEBs.
I marked the bug as wishlist as it is not a bug of the software itself, and it does not block trusty users from using the tool, but I still plan to fix it before 14.10 lands ;) I have already lost several evenings trying to do it, messing around with GPG keys... I need more time.

Yann,

It looks like instructions are just for trusty, We still have lots of
12.04 & some 13.10 users.

One of the moderators - sandyd has a launchpad download now for your
Boot-Repair as a temporary link.
If you need some help with setting up ppa you may want to contact him.

ok thanks.

I confirm the instructions are not just for trusty, they are valid whatever the Ubuntu version.
(the sed command will return "file not found" if not trusty, no big deal)

Hi. I'm a very dumb user who worries about breaking things.

I had seen on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair#A2nd_option_:_install_Boot-Repair_in_Ubuntu

2nd option : install Boot-Repair in Ubuntu
- boot your computer on a Ubuntu live-CD or live-USB. <<<<<<<<
- choose "Try Ubuntu"
- connect to the Internet
- open a new Terminal, then type the following commands (press Enter after each line):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair
sudo sed 's/trusty/saucy/g' -i /etc/apt/sources.list.d/yannubuntu-boot-repair-trusty.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair && (boot-repair &)

but the need to use the instal CD put me off. Too complicated.

But luckily I found in the bug description above,

The PPA does not propose any boot-repair package for 14.04 (Trusty).
----------- WORKAROUND 1 (recommended)
Type the 4 commands indicated here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair#A2nd_option_:_install_Boot-Repair_in_Ubuntu

which points to the same place but minus the need for the CD. So I did it and it worked - I now have Saucy's Boot Repair.

So on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair#A2nd_option_:_install_Boot-Repair_in_Ubuntu
for us dumb ones, can you write
 - either from your existing operating system, or boot your computer on a Ubuntu live-CD or live-USB.

And thank you for all your good work.

Hmmm.. maybe not.

Seems I can't get one of my OS's to show up without using the LiveCD.

I boot SDC8, and have OS's on SDC1 and SDC8, as well as a few old ubuntus & windows on SDA. The initial grub screen shows all except not the one on SDC1. In an attempt to get Boot Repair to add SDA1 to the menu, I tell it to boot from SDA1 by default. A notice pops up saying I have to do that from the live CD. Spose I'll have to bite the bullet.

YannUbuntu, have you any plans to release boot-repair for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS or we should use https://launchpad.net/~sandyd/+archive/boot-repair PPA?

There is a patch in bug #1318381 (Boot-Info incompatibilities with the grub2 and filefrag on Trusty), you promised to include that patch in new boot-repair release, please :)

I tried using this command in Ubuntu 14.04.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair

But it is saying incorrect command. Probably, not finding this key on the server.

Is this temporary/
