Bug Description

My CD/DVD drive was working fine and detected in feisty just after install with the 2.6.20-12 kernel on amd64 intel santarosa platform (vaio vgn-fz11m), and after installing the updated 2.6.20-16 kernel, it doesn't work, when i go back and boot from the old kernel, there it is again. It's an scsi-based cd/dvd in a pretty new laptop, I've tried every kernel switch at boot that I could find around the internet even vaguely relating to this problem to no avail. It manifests by saying Unable to mount the selected volume. mount: special device /dev/hda does not exist

I've tried with:
noapic nolapic acpi=off pci=routeirq pci=noacpi acpi=noirq pci=nomsi acpi=force irqpoll all-generic-ide insmod=ide-generic
libata.atapi_enabled=1

For whatever it's worth, I've tried all of these in various combinations, they all seem to impare the speed of my machine and have no other effect. There's nothing in /dev folder, no cdrom, no hda, no scd0, no sda, no ide or anything CD-Related, just my four partitions on my harddrive.

I would have gone back to using the old kernel, but I can't reinstall the restricted modules as they have been removed from the repositories.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, I've spent a painfully long time on google trying to solve this one and have got nowhere. Thanks!

Also, the DVD drive is listed in Vista as Sony DVD RW AW-G540A ATA Device.
I've tried gutsy 2.6.22 kernel, and the problem is still present.
In feisty with the old kernel it lists it device information under Mobile IDE Controller (pci_8086_2850 intel piix) > IDE device (master) > Sony DVD RW AW-G540A as /dev/hda /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_model_SONY_DVD_RW_AW_G540A

I can confirm, that Feisty kernel (from 7.04 repositories and from updates - 2.6.20-16) doesn't detect CD/DVD drives on lots of laptops, built on santarosa platform. Examples of such laptops are Sony Vaio AR41L , Vaio FZ11E and others (ASUS, Toshiba, etc). Because of this I can't start Feisty LiveCD on computers, built on santarosa platform.
Ubuntu Dapper and Gutsy Tribe 5 kernels (from 08-23 LiveCD) start fine on such computers.
Btw, isn't this bug related to bug #126552 ?

The 18 month support period for Feisty Fawn 6.10 has reached it's end of life - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-7.04-end-of-life . As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.20 kernel task. However, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release is set to come out at the end of the month. It contains a newer 2.6.27 kernel. It would be good to confirm if this is still an issue with Intrepid - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please add the linux kernel task to this bug report. This can by done by going to:

https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/126653/+distrotask

Then change the Source Package Name to be "linux" instead of "linux-source-2.6.20" and click Continue. Thanks.
