Bug Description

Please accept gsmartcontrol package from Debian unstable (main). Currently Ubuntu Jaunty doesn't have this useful package, it would be nice if Ubuntu 9.04 users could have ability to see hard drives status (health) and test hard drives.
Hard drive failure is very common problem, users with broken hard drives often are reporting bugs about Ubuntu problems - they don't know, that there are hard drive problems, not Ubuntu.

GSmartControl 0.8.4-1 is currently in Debian unstable and gsmartcontrol (0.8.3-3) is in testing.

GSmartControl 0.8.4 has these improvements:
    * Linux Software RAID devices are blacklisted now. (backported from Debian).
    * Attributes tab is before the capabilities tab now.
    * A man page has been generously contributed by Giuseppe Iuculano <giuseppe 'at' iuculano.it>.
    * Smartctl version now includes the CVS snapshot date (if available).

gsmartcontrol (0.8.3-3) unstable; urgency=low

  * [7468f7c] debian/control: Fix Vcs-Browsser field
  * [5c94558] debian/gsmartcontrol.1: gsmartcontrol supports quite a
    number of options, added to manpage. Thanks Alexander Shaduri
  * [f8e620b] debian/gsmartcontrol-root: The gsmartcontrol-root script
    was incompatible with the original one, which uses the first
    argument for desktop selection. Fixed, thanks Alexander Shaduri
  * [10861d9] debian/copyright: gsmartcontrol is released under either
    GPL 2 or GPL 3 but not any other version, so point to both of the
    specific versions of the GPL that the package license references and
    fix copyright-refers-to-versionless-license-file lintian warning.

gsmartcontrol (0.8.3-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * [2cc4a61] debian/rules: Do not use --enable-optimize-options in
    configure, and fix FTBFS

gsmartcontrol (0.8.3-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * Initial release (Closes: #508512)
  * debian/patches/01_use_su-to-root.patch: use su-to-root instead of upstream
    gsmartcontrol-root script
  * debian/patches/02_fix_doc_install.patch: Do not install doc and license
    files
  * debian/patches/03_blacklist_md_devices.patch: do not scan /dev/md[0-9]
    devices

Since we are past Feature Freeze [1], you will need to get a Freeze Exception [2] before we can sync this package. Once you have prepared the necessary information for a freeze exception, please subscribe motu-release to this bug report so that they can decide whether to grant the exception. In the mean time, I am unsubscribing ubuntu-universe-sponsors from this bug report.

Hello,

Concerning gsmartcontrol, I do not see it for the moment on the Ubuntu packages, it is not available in Synaptic and not listed in http://packages.ubuntu.com/.

Should we not have to ask for a [needs-packaging] ?

This program would be very useful in Ubuntu.

Best regards.

A needs-packaging bug report is not needed. This application has already been packaged in Debian. We will want to sync the package. needs-packaging bugs are only used for applications that have not been packaged for either Ubuntu or Debian.
