Bug Description

Binary package hint: dvdrip

While dvd::rip shows up under the Multimedia menu in KDE there is no icon for it. Interestingly there is an icon in Gnome for dvd::rip. I have noticed this on Feisty Fawn using dvd::rip version 0.98.2-0.0ubuntu1.

ho hum,

desktop-file-validate dvdrip.desktop

says that it is a valid .desktop file..

does /usr/share/pixmaps/dvdrip.svg exist for you?

It is possible that KDE's menu can not render svg icons, Gnome's one does.

Yes, dvdrip.svg does exist for me. Looking in /usr/share/pixmaps/ I see:

/usr/share/pixmaps/dvdrip.svg /usr/share/pixmaps/ubuntu.svg
/usr/share/pixmaps/gaim.svg /usr/share/pixmaps/vim.svg
/usr/share/pixmaps/gnome-logo-white.svg /usr/share/pixmaps/xscreensaver.svg

One thing to note is that gaim does show up with an icon on the menu, however looking at gaim.desktop it points to a png file.

I can confirm that dvdrip (dvd::rip) doesn't have an icon in kubuntu's kde menu. I'm seeing the same with beep-media-player, which also ships with (and in it's desktop file points to) an svg icon. See bug #116809 for additional details.

So apparently kde just lacks the ability to render svg icons in the menu. Should this be fixed in kde somehow or should each package be providing an non-svg icon?

The KDE bug is that is doesn't read SVG icons if it's not using an SVG icon set. Crystal isn't SVG but KDE fails to read SVG icons even in hicolour where the index.theme file does include scalable directories.

Equally dvdrip should follow the icon spec and put the icon in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps rather than /usr/share/pixmaps/.

Since KDE 3's icon loader won't be getting any fixes this would need PNG versions to be included to see the icon in Kubuntu.
