Bug Description

Whenever I send an email from Evolution 3.1.91 using Ubuntu 11.10, I get this error message:

The reported error was "Failed to append to mbox:///home/[redacted]/.local/share/evolution/mail/local#Sent: Invalid folder URI 'mbox:///home/[redacted]/.local/share/evolution/mail/local#Sent'
Appending to local 'Sent' folder instead.".

Package version is: Evolution 3.1.91-0ubuntu1

In my case, the problem happened thus: My dad has POP email and uses Evolution. After I upgraded him to Oneiric and installed the version of Evolution present on it, the application asked me to convert the mailbox format, so I did. Now, whenever he sends an email, this message pops up. I tried deleting the old mbox account (which had become set to $USERNAME@localhost), but this did not fix the problem.

Same issue, but note that the outbound email does get sent successfully.

@john-m-hancock, thanks for mentioning that, as I forgot to. My dad's mail sends fine as well; we simply don't know how to make the message stop.

As the original reporter, I also forgot to mention that my mail sends just fine. It's just really annoying to get the error message every time I send an email.

Quite easy way to get rid of annoying message is manually change Special Folders settings in email account settings (Default Settings -tab). Just use your existing folders instead of default ones.

Matthew Gatto (mattgatto) wrote :

I got the error message to go away by going to
Edit > Preferences > Mail Accounts > [ select my default mail account ] > 'Edit' button > 'Defaults' tab

and then setting a folder (ex. 'On This Computer' > Sent), clicking OK, and then re-doing the same thing, but un-setting the folder the second time around (by holding down the ctrl key and clicking the selected folder to un-select it) and then hitting OK again.

After this, in the 'Defaults' tab it should say "Sent Messages Folder: <click here to select a folder>"

I forgot to add that, for my situation, I'm using a Gmail IMAP account, so I don't need Evolution to append the sent mails to a 'sent' folder, it is done automatically by the Gmail servers.

I am getting the error as reported in this bug.

I installed 11.10 on 29/11/11 & requested Evolution to be my mail package.

As soon as I sent some mail, I received the error message as reported in 850106.

I checked bugs, found #850106, & read that on 2011-10-25 it was confirmed that it was fixed in Evolution 3.2.0, & subsequently closed.

I would like #850106 to be re-opened.

My versions of Evolution packages are currently:
evolution 3.2.1-0ubuntu1
evolution-common 3.2.1-0ubuntu1
evolution-couchdb 0.5.91-0ubuntu6
evolution-couchdb-backend 0.5.91-0ubuntu6
evolution-data-server 3.2.2-0ubuntu1
evolution-data-server-common 3.2.2-0ubuntu1
evolution-exchange 3.2.0-0ubuntu2
evolution-indicator 0.2.20-0ubuntu3
evolution-plugins 3.2.1-0ubuntu1
evolution-webcal 2.32.0-1build1

I send a lot of mail &, although I appreciate that this is not a serious problem, it is annoying.

Regards, Garry Leach.

Hi again,

I am not sure, if this email reaches the right persons.
I am just an intrested user and not in the development team of

I just needed the steps in comment #8 but didn't need to do the deleting bit. Thanks Matthew, pointed me to the right place.

Upgraded from ubuntu 11.10 to ubuntu 12.04. Got same error when sending. It seems that evolution stores quite differently from the past.

I just did what Matthew suggested:

Edit > Preferences > Mail Accounts > [ select my default mail account ] > 'Edit' button > 'Defaults' tab

and then setting a folder (ex. 'On This Computer' > Sent), clicking OK

After this, in the 'Defaults' tab it should say "Sent Messages Folder: <click here to select a folder>"

Thanks a lot. It was a very annoying pop up.

Upgraded from ubuntu 10.04 to 13.04. Same problem as everyone else; bug still there. Comment #8 fixed it. Although re-setting the default sent folder caused Evolution to crash, it worked properly upon relaunch.
