Bug Description

Currently the gtk paste icon is used as a icon for the Diodon. It would be great to have a diodon specific icon though so to be able to distinguish it from any other clipboard manager and also better integrate it in the application indicator bar.

Please make sure, that icon will look fine in color themes, like Clearlooks, not only in "white and black".
I'm planing to include Diodon clipboard manager into default Baltix GNU/Linux CD/DVD images and Baltix distribution uses not "black and white" theme, but Nodoka GTK theme as default, from https://fedorahosted.org/nodoka/

Could you attach your Diodon icon draft to this issue? So if you do not have time to create an icon from it somebody else might be able to grab it and turn into an icon. Thanks.

Thanks to my new full-time dev job, it is doubtful I'll have much time to work on this.

Attached are some thumbnail sketches of ideas for an icon. I believe that the one that was discussed as preferred is fourth down, on the left, a cartoonish diodon considering biting a paperclip hook (though the finished icon wouldn't include the hook).

Sorry to have to let this go, but I don't think I could finish it in a timely manner. May take a look at it Saturday during the Ubuntu Global Jam.

I think we should be careful of looking to much like OpenBSD's mascot Puffy.

Personally, i would not mind a more simple clipboard icon that is unique to us. Maybe like the second one down. I think it will be more professional and intuitive.

Thanks for the work, though. They all look pretty good!

@hypodermia
Thanks for the sketches again. Would be great if you get around to create an icon during Ubuntu Global Jam. Otherwise feel free to reassign from this bug.

@odd-rationale
True, the icon should not look similar than the mascot Puffy. We might user a different color?

Whether or not this looks professional or can be conflated with Puffy is all in the execution. I wish I'd already gotten something mocked up. Maybe tomorrow. In the meantime, I'm unassigning this bug from me.

When designing an icon it should roughly followed the Tango guidelines:

Following sizes are needed best in svg:
16x16, 22x22, 24x24 (for gnome-panel), 32x32 and 48x48 SVG

For good icons (if I may kindly suggest), you could contact https://plus.google.com/100530892038948253747/posts , just ask a question

the person from the link has made monochrome icons for various lenses and apps

I am not 100% sure that he will help, but you should ask,

I don't think he wants money, he is usually "rooted" in dealing and tweaking Ubuntu apps

Thanks for the hint.

Currently, someone offered to create the icons. However this person has not had the time yet to create them. I will therhefore keep this in mind and might contact him on Google+

where does the icon reside please, or is it hardcoded like VLC?

currently diodon uses the gtk-paste icon. So if you want to change the diodon icon you have to change this icon in your theme of choice.

However, the good news is that currently someone is working on a new icon. Do not know when it will be ready. Hopefully sooner than later. We will see.

Can't you just use a monochrome icon from a GPL'd theme? (This shouldn't take so long, honestly).

This would be a temporary solution. That's true. I might consider.

However though, this issue is rather about to be able to distinguish Diodon from any other clipboard manager. Therefore, changing main description and title to make it more descriptive.

Unfortunately, the person who is currently designing the icons is really busy and does not have much free time.

Although the plan is that the icons could be done by the end of the year and I will be able to include it beginning next year.

However as said, this might change. So I will keep this issue up-to-date. And will get back to you if a temporary solution with the monochrome icon would be necessary. Thanks for the offer.

So this issue took longer then anticipated. But finally there is now a new icon set for Diodon.

There are two different kind of icons: A colored one looking like a Diodon fish. This is the default for all themes, may it be as an application icon or also in the indicator/panel. Then there is another one only for the Ubuntu theme ubuntu-mono-dark and ubuntu-mono-light which simply represents a clip. This is only used in the Ubuntu indicator.

Please let me know about your feedback. Especially if you see any flaws of the icon may it be a color which is not after the guideline, not correct size, wrong padding or anything else. This is very much appreciated.

The package should be soon available in the daily-ppa https://code.launchpad.net/~diodon-team/+archive/daily or can be checked out with bzr https://code.launchpad.net/~diodon-team/diodon/trunk

Isn't there supposed to be a mono icon when using the ubuntu indicator (per oliver's comment on the 26th? I installed diodon 1.0 in ubuntu 12.10 and get the totally out of place colored fish icon in my panel...

How can I get the mono icon?

Could it be that your are using an 3rd party theme instead of the Ubuntu default?

If so there has been a discussion about this issue.

Hmm, that must be an bug then. Could you update to the newest stable release 1.0.1 (maybe you do already) and run the command "ubuntu-bug diodon" to open a new bug on launchpad for this? Best then also attach a screenshot for the displaced indicator icon.

Thanks.
