I'm also seeing this exact problem with an HP 6310 printer. I wonder if it is related to Launchpad Bug #313504, as the HP6310 is also a multi-function device (scanner + flash card reader).

Note: when this happens, you can very quickly burn a huge amount of space in /var/log. As in, 39 gigabytes in /var/log/daemon.log, /var/log/kern.log, /var/log/messages, and /var/log/syslog combined in just a couple of hours. I noticed this because my brand-spanking new SSD suddenly registered a huge amount of writes more than I was expected, and I started hunting to figure out what was going on....

As a result, people may be quite surprised when this happens to them.

Forwarded to the HPLIP upstream project, seems to be a problem of HP's CUPS backend.

Is there anybody who managed to create a (temporary) workaround ? Thanks in advance! How can i downgrade the printer-drivers ?

I have the exact same problem with the same printer. I was trying to print a photo from GIMP on Kubuntu 9.10. I noticed that something went wrong when I got a "Home partition is out of space" error dialog.

My workraround is:
Go to System -> Administration -> Printing -> right-click on the printer -> Properties -> Device URI - Change... -> Connection (choose USB). I hope it helps.

Ok so this seems to work for people on gnome, but I have no idea how to make this work on KDE. I couldn't find the way to change the connection to USB, as the previous posters mentionned.

Currently, my printer's URI looks like this:

hp:/usb/Photosmart_2570_series?serial=MY7293132V04DY

Can any of the people who got it working post the full working URI of their printer?

Otherwise, which configuration file is this URI stored into?

Thanks, but what does your working URI look like?

usb://HP/Officejet%206300%20series?serial=...

I think that's the one that was working (I haven't used the printer in a while)

Finally, I got it working for me. I had to install Lucid-Gnome in VirtualBox, and setup the printer as described in this bug report, then copy the URI to my real machine. It turned out that those two URI use different drivers:

hpijs (doesn't work): hp:/usb/Photosmart_2570_series?serial=MY7293132V04DY
hpcups (works): usb://HP/Photosmart%202570%20series?serial=MY7293132V04DY&interface=1

So it seems that this specific problem is only tied to the hpijs driver, and that it is easily solved by using the hpcups driver instead
