Bug Description

There are some errors in the setup/definition of the Linux Libertine fonts in Karmic. Specifically:

  (i) Linux Libertine O bold registers as a different font ('Linux Libertine').

(ii) Selecting 'bold' for Linux Libertine O in OpenOffice actually results in bold italic being displayed

(iii) In other applications, text that ought to be bold is left as regular (e.g. in a Lilypond document that uses Linux Libertine).

This suggests that the Linux Libertine O bold font is somehow improperly named/registered with the system and that applications trying to use it are approximating solutions as best they can.

Further to the above: if you examine the .ttf files using Font Viewer, the font name for LinLibertine_Bd.ttf is given as 'Linux Libertine, Bold' whereas the others are named 'Linux Libertine O', whether it's 'Linux Libertine O, Regular', 'Linux Libertine O, Bold Italic' or whatever.

In the latest download of the fonts available from SourceForge all the fonts are simply named 'Linux Libertine' (no O) so presumably some changes have been made in the Ubuntu/Debian packaging process that were not completed properly.

Hi all!

I recently took over maintenance of the linux-libertine package in
Debian.

Removing the 'O' from the fontname for the TrueType Variant is
explicitely advokated in the sourcepackage upstream ships so I won't
change the Name for the ttf Variant back.

However I'm currently toying with an additional OpenType package
which would then provide the 'O' Names. However as far as I'm aware
OpenOffice can't handle OpenType fonts so you'll probably have to
convert.

Regards

 Christoph

Well, the problem is that the bold variant of the font has the O removed
(which I agree is good:-) but the regular, italic and bold italic
variants don't.

So by all means strip out the O, but it needs to be done for ALL the
font variants!!

Best wishes,

Is there any movement/progress on this bug?

To reiterate, this is not about whether the TrueType variant has a fontname of 'Linux Libertine' or 'Linux Libertine O'. It's about the _inconsistency_ between different faces of the font -- the bold face is named 'Linux Libertine' whereas the regular, italic and bold italic faces are named 'Linux Libertine O'.

This needs fixing, _especially_ if there is also going to be an OpenType package added.

Hi!

Getting used to a new package is not always a thing one can do in
a week while also following other duties and real life. If you want a
quick solution, the easiest thing would be to provide a patch!

However there seems to be one ready to rename the bold font back
to the name with " O" which will a) probably be the only thing that
can be done after karmic feature freeze and b) can be done quick so
I'll try to bring that in.

AFAIK this bug is fixed in Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic" final version (ttf-linux-libertine package 4.4.1-3 contains patch from Chris Lawrence, could someone check if this bug is reproducible with Ubuntu 9.10 final?

Hi there.

Could you please test the situation with the linux-libertine package that I have uploaded to my PPA? You can see the pertinent information at:

I am only providing OTF fonts from now on.

Regards.
