Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in nautilus.

Doesn't seem so. Again imo the FTP support in Nautilus is close to being useless without this feature. Isn't anyobody careing about implenting this?

As a part of my job involves heavy backend development on web systems, which
are usually accessible via FTP, this would be a feature I would really like
to see enter Nautilus.

I would be willing to look into writing a patch for this, but need to know
more information on where this problem lies. Is anyone aware of whether this
is a nautilus bug or an issue with lack of support in gvfsd-ftp? If this is
merely a lack of Nautilus support it is likely to be significantly easier to
implement than writing full support for this feature into gvfs as well.

Its definitely an issue in gvfs. Look at the upstream bug at the gnome
bugzilla, there you can read detailed information where the problem lies
and what is needed to solve it.

I have had to sacrifice speed and switch to SSH when I connect to another system on my local network. A resolution to this issue would be awesome.

I've written a patch (attached) to gvfs that enables permissions to be read - which I've been using for a week or so. I have also written code for the set operation but it needs a little bit more work to tidy up, which I'm prepared to do if it's going to be adopted by Ubuntu. I have submitted the patch to Gnome bugzilla but there seems to be no interest. Is this a dead end? I would very much like to see this feature incorporated in 11.04.
