Bug Description

the (k)ubuntu login windows have a *caps lock* warning. fine thing!
but on notebooks a *num lock* warning is important too

here is the full story:
- worked at home with my notebook
- switched numlock to on
- stopped working, hibernated
- wanted to work again in the train
- didnt manage to unlock the screen after un-hibernating
- gave up and did a poweroff by force

this happened several times but i couldnt tell why.

what happened?
numlock was still on, and in my notebook keyboard (like many) this turned some of my letters to a numpad.
nasty user experience...

thank you for your bug report, could you make a screenshot of the dialog you are using? gdm and gnome-screensaver display warning about capslock in GNOME

the printscreen feature does not work here when the screen is locked.

the bug is about: to display the same warning for "NUMLOCK" as for "CAPSLOCK"

seems that I misread the request, not sure it would be correct though, having numlock activated is the standard configuration for many users and not something to display a warning about

you might read my first comment and see why *on notebooks* this is an issue: on most notebooks numlock turns half the keyboard to numbers (u->4, i->5, o->6) and if your password contains those letters you are stuck without knowing why.

I did read your comments but I'm not convinced that displaying a message that can confuse them to 99% of the users to benefit notebook users is a good thing, maybe that should be an option or something

i can imagine a message that is not "warning" but "info" style.
and, you are right, this is not an issue on keyboards with a separate number block.

so this warning should be given only on those keyboards.
(does the display manager know about notebook keyboard layouts??)

confirming as a wishlist, gdm might not be the right component though since your usecase describes unlocking a session which is gnome-screensaver

There is a numlock warning in GDM 3, available in Ubuntu 11.10. It works for login and the screensaver unlock.
