As an update, I added some files to one of the directories and ran a backup. It did indeed copy the new files to the backup directory (so it is working properly) but the GUI still shows Backup grayed out and "Working:..." on the status bar.

Updated to 0.9.24 from repository.

Application runs and then crashes. You see it momentarily show on
screen and then it exits. Ran from CLI, no start and no visible error.
Nothing in messages either.

Strange !!!
The only suggestion I have:
1. Uninstall backintime: sudo apt-get remove backintime-common
2. Clear pyc: sudo rm -rf /usr/share/backintime
3. Reinstall backintime: sudo apt-get install backintime-gnome

What version of Ubuntu are you using ?

Ack! Same issue after that.

As a test, I even uninstalled backintime-common, and meld, deleted
/usr/share/backintime and then reinstalled it. Still crashes.

This box is Ubuntu Desktop 8.04.

After manually installing this morning I let it update to 0.9.24 and it at
least runs. But nothing was backed up.

Same issue on the latest. Runs for a second, says Working:Finalizing and
then Done, no backup needed.

What am I missing? This worked up until 0.9.22. Since 0.9.24 it's been
failing.

I'm having the same problem. It says Working: Finalizing and then Done, but nothing is backed up. This does not appear to be a duplicate of the large files bug. I tried backing up two folders with a total of three files, each only a few Kb in size. None of it got backed up. Installed 0.9.22 and it seems to work OK. I'm also on Ubuntu 8.04.
