Bug Description

Hello I recently installed both kde and gnome back in time on a Ubuntu 12.04 operating system. I tried to back my file from the following path:
/media/Windows/Documents and Settings/gogliop/Desktop/Research/
to the following path on a portable device:
/media/VERBATIM/data/back up
The back up takes little time and the backup folder is empty. I would like to know what it is happening and how to fix it. Here attach you have the log script:

Hi Pietro,
I couldn't find anything suspicious in your log. Which user do you use for BackInTime (gogliop or root)? Is /media/Windows mounted and accessible for the user which is running BIT?
Please run 'backintime -b' from terminal and post the output in here.

Regards,
Germar

I mounted Windows through the GUI in Ubuntu, as I mounted VERBATIM. If I run the backintime -b as root I receive the following message:"

If I run backintime as gogliop, I receive a very long message, I will copy part of it:

Which filesystem do you use? Looks like FAT!?
FAT is not able to handle hard-links. I'd recommend using ext[2|3|4] instead.

Here you have the response from the command line through the df -T command:
"
/dev/sdb1 vfat 312492320 263876640 48615680 85% /media/VERBATIM
/dev/sda2 fuseblk 288242180 86261360 201980820 30% /media/Windows

However I have been using the VERBATIM hard dik hundreds of times with backintime and I did not have an issue.
I would like to thank you for your precious collaboration.

Hi Pietro,
I'm not sure if there was a change in 'cp' on what to do if hard-linking isn't allowed. But I'm getting the same error here if I run 'cp -aRl' on FAT. But even if it worked before your old snapshots are not incremental. Which means that every new snapshot wasted space on your disk.

I highly recommend EXT. If you need to use the drive on WIN/OSX, too, you could at least use NTFS. This is able to handle hard-links, too.

Germar

Thanks Germar,
unfortunately I cannot format my Windows partition which has been formatted ntfs but as you see there the filesystem in linux appear to be fuseblk. I tred with the command line to mount the hard disk as ntfs but unsuccesfully. I tried storage device manager but it does not work. However now I set up my Windows partition as mode 777 which previously I was not able to do it. I was wondering if you could give me any other suggestions. I would like to thank you for your precious collaboration.

NTFS diver for Linux is fuseblk. This is all fine. But I wasn't talking about /media/Windows (/dev/sda2). You don't need to change anything on this.
But your destination drive /media/VERBATIM (/dev/sdb1) is formatted with FAT and that's the problem. Please try to format that partition with EXT3 (don't forget to save all data on a separate drive before as they will be destroyed).

I formatted another folder in ext3 as you see this is the results from the commandline df -T:
/dev/sda1 fuseblk 307196 36020 271176 12% /media/System
/dev/sdb1 ext3 15388032 169592 14436772 2% /media/backup
/dev/sda2 fuseblk 288242180 84939780 203302400 30% /media/Windows
the backup folder has become my new snapshot folder, by running the backintime -b command this is the reply from the prompt:
Back In Time

Checking the directory, there are several directories up to Windows inside the new_snapshot. The Windows directory is then left empty.

Hmm, that's quite wired. It doesn't print any error. Looks like /media/Windows is a symlink but it can't be one. Please post the output of 'ls -la /media'

Just in case please activate 'Copy links (dereference symbolic links)' in 'Expert Options' and try again to create a new snapshot.
Sorry for poking around in the fog. I've no idea what is going wrong. All seems to be fine with your files.
