Bug Description

gnome-control-center 1:3.3.91-0ubuntu2, Ubuntu 12.04 beta 1

1. Open System Settings.
2. Navigate to any settings panel (e.g. "Appearance", "Bluetooth", or Keyboard").
3. Click the button that appears in the navigation bar with the same name as the panel (e.g. "Appearance", "Bluetooth", or Keyboard").

What happens:
2. The title of the panel is repeated unattractively in a button diagonally below it.
3. The button is clickable, but clicking it never does anything.

In combination with bug 933947, this means that no matter where you are in System Settings, there is always a button that is clickable but does nothing.

The simplest solution would be to remove the button.

Thank you for your bug report, that's supposed to be a breadcrumb bar similar to nautilus and a design request to respond to confusion showing in user testing, cf https://docs.google.com/a/canonical.com/document/d/1ILTJDiDCd25Npt2AmgzF8aOnZZECxTfM0hvsbWT2BxA/edit?ndplr=1

What else do you suggest? The issue was mostly that people would open i.e the bluetooth panel from the corresponding indicator, then click "all settings" without understanding that it was not "all bluetooth settings" but the g-c-c shell grid, since they didn't come from there they would get lost at this point

Do you have any other suggest to address that?

Changed in gnome-control-center (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Incomplete

I did not realize this was an Ubuntu customization.

In August 2008 I considered and rejected the design Ubuntu is using now <https://live.gnome.org/SystemSettings?action=AttachFile&do=view&target=sketches-p1.jpg> ("current category is swamped by surrounding stuff"), and I worked out a design that would not have the same problems.

I've explained it in more detail in <https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=643322#c9>, but in short: Back and Forward buttons would make the "All Settings" button more obviously a Home button (and would be more useful as cross-references between panels increase). And showing the panel title under the "System Settings" title would make it more obvious where "All Settings" goes to.

note that the look got slightly improved so it looks less standalone buttons now, that's about what we will change for this cycle though

Perhaps a quick solution is disabling the button that does nothing?
