Sub-optimal task-switching interaction with Firefox downloads window

This needs looking at from a high-level to figure out a solution. The use-case in question is:

  1. Load Firefox
  2. Click on a PDF file
  3. PDF Opens in Evince and focus switches there
  4. Close Evince
  5. Firefox downloads window appears, and focus switches there
  6. Close Firefox downloads window and, and focus is finally back to the original Firefox window

Ideally this could be optimised; some ideas:

  a. Evince should be opening in the background, underneath Firefox
  b. Firefox downloads could open in a tab, so not introduces another window into the next

All-in-all, the Firefox window seems to interact sub-optimally with the new alt-tab experience, because it "takes over" the most recent alt-tab slot when popping up.
