I also agree that the user should have the option of turning the global menu off, on, or on only when maximized. This would improve customization of the unity interface, which is sadly lacking.

One reason the global menu is annoying is that it collapses all of the menus and only displays the application name. This makes it difficult to find a particular menu, and it is visually distracting to have the top left corner constantly shifting whenever you mouse over it. Global menus work on Mac OSX because they are in the same place for every application, making it visually consistent and easily navigated. Of course, some people doubtless like the aesthetic of hiding the menus, so again, the user should be given a choice.

Choices are good!
