@Pedro: no offense but I'd say new designs are not the issue here. It was pretty much established months ago. We're just waiting for implementation and some voice from the devs camp to explain what's going on. What's stopping them from implementing and publishing the fix.

I think your proposals might be worth a discussion at the Ayatana mailing list, though.
