Bug Description

Ctrl, Alt, and Shift have historically been used as modifier keys and I believe that by themselves, should not be bound to any specific action (currently opening the HUD) by default as this interferes with too many existing functions.

=====A USER STORY=====
It's mostly an issue when I'm in the process of hitting Alt+Tab or Alt+` and then decide that I've changed my mind and I let go of Alt. Instead of nothing happening, the HUD appears which is not what I would expect.

Thing is, when Alt is clicked by itself, the HUD opens. All other key presses including Alt+something are sent to the focused window(s). Is that what you want?

In fact, in my case, I haven't opened the HUD mistakenly in the last few months. The detection code works really well.

I now understand what you mean since I face a very similar issue with the alt+backarrow key in browsers. I am going to keep this report incomplete and add ayatana-design as affects to this bug report that we could get feedback from design on the issue.

This bug is Opinion. It's an opinion that I agree with. I don't like the HUD using Alt either, but it has been explicitly designed that way.

The Alt+Arrow issue Omer mentions is bug 969039...
