Bug Description
Using meta refresh causes funky stats. It would be great to just use ajax for polling, falling back to meta refresh for non-js users.

Do we need to replace the entire meta-refresh mechanism to correct the problem with stats gathering? Could we try posting custom events to the metrics system upon instance creation?
