Bug Description

Problem: awn is surrounded by a zone in which its blocking mouse access to windows/trays surrounding it.

I have awn running bottom-center. I have "trayer" running bottom right.
Without awn running, I can access icons in my "trayer" (right click and left click mouse work on for instance nm-applet). If I move "trayer" up towards the top left corner, and start awn, I can also access it without problem.
As soon as I start awn (settings: *no* "auto hide...", *no* "keep below...", no "Maximized ...") access to windows directly above awn is blocked right up to where the "bubble" containing the name of the application ends. Anything beside the awn, both left and right, including the trayer, can also not be accessed with the mouse.
It is like there is an invisible "zone" around the awn where the only thing clickable is the awn itself.

If more info is needed or I can do something to help, please let me know!

My guess OpenBox is suffering a variation of the issue that can be seen in this opencompositing bug http://bugs.opencompositing.org/show_bug.cgi?id=637

IMO, what it basically comes down to is that there is a large transparent window that needs to be ignored... and instead the WM should use the strut to determine the area of the dock.

njpatel, any comments?

Though I'm using an Gnome/Openbox combo, I also experienced this when going Gnome only with Compiz. It's less of a bug, rather just sheer annoyance. Anything that was to the left/right and above the dock up to the text of the applications were completely un-interactable with the mouse. I know this is more to do with the way AWN draws the graphics, but a smaller 'area-of-effect' would be nice.

Regarding the issue reported by Gary:

Unable to reproduce with

Gentoo, metacity, awn trunk, stalonetray.

Gentoo, metacity, awn trunk, stalonetray.

Ubuntu Hardy, xfwm4, awn-testing ppa, stalonetray

or

Ubuntu Hardy, compiz, awn-testing ppa, stalonetray

My guess is this probably a 0.2.1 issue. Can someone else confirm this happens with 0.2.1?

Gary it might be worth while trying the awn-testing ppa to see if that resolves the issue.

This bug affects me on Xubuntu 12.04 with awn 0.4.1
I can't find a PPA for Ubuntu 12.04 with more recent versions of awn.
