Weird Icon placement after launching a program

Bug Description

Just updated to ubuntu 8.04 and this is what happened. I uninstalled and reinstalled from hardy repos because other reported other problems so i thought it might be related. Same thing happened.

Whenever I start AWN, it looks normal. Then, after something is launched, the icons jump way off the bar. The space at the bottom of the screen reserved for AWN stays just like the icons should be right there, but they are higher up.

graphics card is GeForce 7150M

Which version of the nvidia drivers are you running?

Could you upgrade/downgrade to a different version to see if that changes anything?

It might be worth going to awn-manager -> General -> Bar Appearance, and check that "icon offset" is a reasonable value.

Stupid question, but how do I tell what version of nvidia drivers I am running? It is the default nvidia restricted drivers that I checked under restricted drivers manager.

The icon offset is a reasonable value. remember, it looks normal when I login. It stays looking normal until I launch a program from it.

open synaptic package manager and search for installed packages with "nvidia" in them.

Can someone please try resetting their awn preferences to see if this resolves the issue.

(Note this applies to gconf configuration backend... which is everyone who installs from one of the repos).

Please note this will reset all awn settings to the default so it will be necessary to reconfigure.

Please thoroughly test before installing any custom themes as at least one user has indicated this issue appeared after trying some custom awn themes.

I have the same problem, but it seemed to just start after I installed themes, worked fine for the few days before.

I tried gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/avant-window-navigator in the terminal and... I think it worked. THANKS!!!

A Request:

If someone has this issue it would be greatly appreciated if the following was done before doing a recursive unset.

gconftool-2 -R /apps/avant-window-navigator

And attach the output to this bug indicating it was before the unset.

After doing the unset please repeat the process.

gconftool-2 -R /apps/avant-window-navigator

And attach the output to this bug indicating it was after the unset.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please take the time to review the output to make sure there are no passwords, usernames etc. If there are then please removed them before posting. In general there shouldn't be but it's best to make sure.

I installed nvidia driver via synaptic as mentioned and reset awn preferences. It had no immediate effect, but when I restarted X all was fine. I should have only done one of the things and then the other to see what actually fixed it. It is working just great now, though. Thank you. Unfortunately, I don't know that i'm much help to anyone else now.
