Was your network functioning at the time the error occurred? The mail applet does not currently handle being offline very gracefully.

I'm running on wireless. The problem occurred immediately after login, so maybe the wireless was not connected as yet, so you might be right.

There should be a better way to notify of a connection problem. And when a connection made, the problem should automatically go-away. Maybe the icon should change if there is no connection.

Yes, the mail applet does need to handle the "no network connection" case more gracefully. Unfortunately, this applet does not currently have a maintainer.

This was fixed quite some time ago and haws now been improved (the notifications on network errors), so i'm closing this bug
