You will have to install 2 more dependicies and you will be able to get the volume control applet to work.
Open your terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install python-alsaaudio python-gconf

Changed in awn:
status: New → Confirmed

Hm... Okay. Thanks for that, I had no idea how to fix it :). However, why are those packages not installed with awn's default install? And if that would make awn to bulky or something, why does a little box not appear after adding the applet in question that says certain packages need to be installed to make the applet work?

If you're using a third-party repository, then it's the packager's responsibility to track and add those dependency packages to the package metadata.

If you're installing from source, it's not feasible to check for many python packages at compile-time. See this bug for more details:

One more question: How can I make "Notification Area" Work (what things do I need to install?)?
