Bug Description

Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Beta

Grabbed AWN today, and ran with notification area applet. Noticed the applet sticks out like a sore thumb, as it takes a grey bg, and the icons vary in size.

On Ubuntu (not sure about other OS's) only one notification area can be running at a time. To see awn's notification area just remove the notification area from the main panel, add the applet to awn, log off, log back on, and bingo, it should be there. Hope this helps. Also, I agree. The notification area does stick out like a sore thumb.

I can confirm this bug. using the notification area-plugin means you will end up with a fully functional, but very ugly little systray.
Some icons, like liferea, rhythmbox and network manager are the right small size, but pidgin for instance, spawns a very big icon.
To make it even more painfull to watch is that it indeed spawns an ugly grey box around it.

This kills the good looks of AWN entirely.

For everyone who posted on this bug, the issue is well known but work has not yet been started due to the impossibility of doing so. There is a chance that the issue would be fixed in 0.3. Please refer to the wiki for more information:

Okay, so we've established that it's not very practical to fix the transparency issue. But what about the other half of this issue title? The improper scaling of svg icons in the notification area is a big problem. It goes beyond bad looks, it makes it nearly unusable.

Banshee-1 and the Ubuntu Update Manager (during installs only) both result in huge notification areas. This, I suspect is fixable since they are fine under the standard Gnome notification applet. I've attached a screenshot showing the issue.

Seems that notification area for gnome-applet will gain transparency in the next release of GTK+ and GNOME (2.26).
