Notification doesn't bring up options

Bug #392770 reported by David Saff

Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
Astrid
Incomplete

Bug Description

Notifications are great. However, once or twice a day, Astrid will enter a state in which it no longer brings up the "View Task / Ignore / Snooze" option when the notification is pressed, and instead just opens Astrid. After this happens once, it happens every time, until I use Advanced Task Manager to kill Astrid. After that, notifications work the normal way again.

I am using 2.8.6, but this problem has been around for several versions, now.

FYI,

This still happens with the most recent version.

If you have any more information on why this could be happening, that would be great. I'll poke around also.

Changed in astrid:
importance: Undecided → High
status: New → Incomplete

Tim,

If I figured out how to use adb to get some stack traces, would that help?

Again, this is still plaguing me--stayed with me from my G1 to my N1. To be honest, it's a testament to the overall usefulness of Astrid that I've continued to use it despite this problem, but another month without a fix will send me back to the App Market, I fear. Any hope? Any way I can help?

David,

Do the tasks that you're getting notifications for still exist? What
happens when you click on a notification? Just trying to figure out what
could cause this.

The tasks definitely still exist. When I click on the notification,
Astrid comes up as if I had clicked directly on the icon on the home
page. There's no dialog box with "View Task / Snooze / Quit".

My only clue is that there seems to be a longer lag in these cases
than when clicking an notification that succeeds in bringing up the
dialog box.

I have 100-200 or so tasks in Astrid most of the time.

Without a deep understanding of the workings of Astrid or Android, my
uninformed guess is that Android imposes a time/resource limit on the
activity launched by the notification, and when Astrid takes to long,
the "respond to notification" activity is being somehow permanently
killed until it's re-installed when the full Astrid app is restarted.

The good news:

- Really like the ability to mark a task as done from the notification.
- All notifications have yielded dialogs so far.

The bad news:

- With vibrate-on-alarm enabled, the vibration appears to continue
forever, at least after pressing "Go Away!"

Ok, I'm glad your issue seems to be fixed. Soon after i sent you the link I found and fixed the vibration bug - got a little overzealous and accidentally set it to repeat forever. =P if you want to update your version of Astrid,

Otherwise, just wait a couple days for the new version to hit the market. Thanks for testing it out!

My version is 2.1-update1.

If it helps, this is a familiar situation in which this problem occurs:

1) Check phone after a while, notice multiple reminders.
2) Select the first reminder, "View task", and then "Start Timer" (this is the task I want to work on now).
3) Select the next reminder, to postpone it for an hour or so.
4) We're now in the dead state, where no further reminders will open the familiar reminder dialog.

Unfortunately for the state of debugging, I can sometimes go through these actions without triggering the dead state, and I sometimes reach the dead state without going through these actions. Hope it helps, anyway. This is really the only thing keeping me from being 100% ecstatic about Astrid.
