:VERSION was documented in version dependencies, but not as an option. I have just fixed that, adding version to the DEFSYSTEM grammar page.
The documentation in the manual is actually a little misleading. I call VERSION a "system option" although as far as the code is concerned, it can be used for any component. But I would like to discourage this practice, so I think that documenting it in this way is wrong.
